Multivitamins for Macular Degeneration

A multivitamin alone cannot provide the same levels of antioxidants and zinc as the formulation studied previously. The formulation's levels of antioxidants and zinc are considerably higher than the amounts in any daily multivitamin.
If you are already taking daily multivitamins and your doctor suggests you take the high-dose macular degeneration vitamins, be sure to review all your vitamin supplements with your doctor before you begin. Because multivitamins contain many important vitamins not found in the macular degeneration formulation, you may want to take a multivitamin along with the vitamins for macular degeneration.

Older People and Macular Degeneration Vitamins

There are reasons to be cautious when using high-dose vitamins for macular degeneration, particularly among older people. Many older people take prescription medications, and a considerable number use over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal medicines.
High-dose nutrients can interfere with medications and can interact with other nutrients to decrease the absorption of nutrients into the body. This can ultimately affect a person's nutritional and health status. For example, the zinc concentration in the macular degeneration formulation is at a very high dose and could cause copper-deficiency anemia. To prevent this, copper was added to the macular degeneration formulation.
People who are being treated for chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, should not take high-dose nutrients without talking with their doctors.
In general, treating yourself with high doses of macular degeneration vitamins is not recommended. Individuals who are considering taking high-dose vitamins should discuss this with their primary care doctors and/or eye care professionals. They can help you determine which formulation and dosages are best for you.
