Macular Degeneration Home > PreserVision
PreserVision has been studied in a very important clinical study -- the AREDS study. This very large study consisted of several parts, and one part looked at using a specific combination of vitamins and zinc to treat macular degeneration.
The AREDS study suggested that PreserVision can significantly slow the worsening of macular degeneration in certain groups of people. These groups include those with intermediate macular degeneration in one or both eyes, or those with advanced (severe) macular degeneration in one eye (but not both eyes). This study did not show a benefit for people with early or mild macular degeneration.
PreserVision is not a cure for macular degeneration and will not restore vision that has already been lost. However, it can help prevent macular degeneration from worsening.
General considerations for when and how to take PreserVision include the following:
- PreserVision comes in tablet or soft gel form. It is taken twice daily.
- The medication should be taken with meals.
- Take PreserVision at the same times each day to maintain an even level of the medication in your blood.
- For the medicine to work properly, it must be taken at the appropriate dose. PreserVision will not work if you stop taking it.
The dose of PreserVision depends on the specific form of PreserVision (tablets versus soft gels). As is always the case, do not adjust your PreserVision dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
