Macular Degeneration and Vision Protection
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that if you have intermediate or advanced dry macular degeneration in one eye only, you should talk with your physician about whether nutritional supplements may help you. If supplements are recommended, your physician can also tell you how to take them safely (see Vitamins for Macular Degeneration). Not everyone needs macular degeneration supplements. For example, in large quantities, zinc can be toxic, and beta-carotene can increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. High-dose nutrients can also interfere with medications and can decrease the absorption of other nutrients into the body.
