Macular Degeneration Treatment
There are a few types of treatment for macular degeneration -- the one your eye care professional recommends will depend on the specific type of macular degeneration you have. With dry macular degeneration, early treatment can be possible with certain vitamins. Photodynamic therapy, laser surgery, and injections are some of the treatment options for wet macular degeneration. Regardless of the treatment used, there is no cure for macular degeneration, and lost vision cannot be restored.
Macular degeneration treatment options depend on the type of macular degeneration a person has.
For dry macular degeneration, early treatment may be possible with certain vitamins (see Vitamins for Macular Degeneration). There is no treatment for advanced dry macular degeneration.
Treatment options for wet macular degeneration can include:
- Photodynamic therapy
- Laser surgery (see Surgery for Macular Degeneration)
- Injections.
While treatments may save remaining vision, they do not improve sight already lost from macular degeneration. There is no cure for macular degeneration.
Your doctor can describe your treatment options and the expected results of each. You and your doctor can work together to develop a treatment plan that meets your medical needs and personal values. Choosing the most appropriate treatment is a decision that ideally involves both the patient and the healthcare team.
