PreserVision and Pregnancy

Ocuvite® PreserVision® is a vitamin and mineral supplement used to treat age-related macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a condition primarily affecting the elderly, and it is very unlikely that a pregnant woman would have macular degeneration.
 
PreserVision has not been studied in pregnant women. It is not known if this particular combination of vitamins and minerals would cause any problems for a pregnant woman or her fetus. Some PreserVision formulations contain beta-carotene, which is closely related to vitamin A. While vitamin A can cause birth defects, it seems that beta-carotene does not cause similar problems.
 
However, a prenatal vitamin is the best choice for vitamin and mineral supplementation in pregnant women. PreserVision probably provides too much of some vitamins and minerals and too little (or none) of others. Ask your healthcare provider to recommend a good prenatal vitamin.
